Social media is (also) your news channel too
As a Twitter-user (especially) it's easy to end up following a bunch of people without really 'listening' to them - unless you spend a good deal of your time reading through tweets. Many people don't use Twitter at all because they find it pointless... and because time is an expensive resource to most of us.
But, but but... Who doesn't want to be in on the newest trends - especially in this business? The tools for that are many, but one tool that's especially accessible is crowwwsnest.com. This site locates Top 10 URL's from Twitter-users involved in ad/design/tech. So you're always on top of the latest trends and most recent relevant articles... and you don't even need your own Twitter-profile.
Here are a few hits of the trade from crowwwsnest.com
3LiveShop - Innovation on the customer's terms
The phone company Three is said to have developed an online shop that puts you in direct contact with a sales person while you're shopping from home. An intriguing concept...
Music project/Advertisement
From Japan comes this neat advertisement project called ''Giant Wooden Xylophone'.
Priority is King
The social media is a noisy mishmash so you have to have a filter - otherwise it's pretty much worthless. Devour.com is a site dedicated to highlighting relevant and good online videos that deserve special mentioning (according to the people at Devour.com).
From devour.com:
"Around 35 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. It would take you approximately 1800 years to watch all those millions of videos. So good luck trying to find something worth watching on your lunch break."
This statement describes the social media in a nutshell and explains why it's so important to filter the information you get through your social media of choice.
A side-note for the sceptics
Sceptics often argue that social media channels are too noisy - so noisy that using them is pointless (whether you're an individual or company) - "the media is all junk". This can be true... and that's why you have to justify your presence in a social media channel and determine exactly what you want to listen to.
